Cooking at its best

Like homemade fluffy biscuits, well don't look any further. Now this recipe takes a little work and practice but once you get it down pat, you'll never eat store bought again.

Fresh Biscuits

  • 3 1/2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/3 cups milk

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Grease a large baking sheet or line with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter and shortening with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. Add milk and stir until all the dry ingredients have been moistened. DO not overmix, this is the secret to light and fluffy biscuits.

3. Roll the dough out on a floured surface and cut into 4-inch rounds using a cookie cutter or by cutting around a small saucer or the top of a can. Place on greased baking sheet about 1-inch apart.

4. Bake 15 to 18 minutes or until tops are golden brown and biscuits sound hollow when gently tapped. Serve warm.

Makes 8 biscuits
