Elizabeth E. McGarvie

Elizabeth Evelyn MacGarvie of Dalhousie, NB passed away peacefully on May 26, 2016. Elizabeth was born to parents Mary (MacKinnon) and Duncan MacGarvie on July 23, 1920 in the town of Cambellton, NB.

Elizabeth graduated from Cambellton High School in 1937 and then attended Normal School in Fredericton after which she engaged in a brief teaching career. In her third and final year as a school teacher while teaching in the one room schoolhouse at Point La Nim, Elizabeth had the pleasure of teaching her younger siblings Billy, Johnny and Jean.

Elizabeth then enrolled in a three year nurses training program in Keene, New Hampshire. Upon completion she joined the US Army Nurse Corps and within months was on a ship with 700 nurses headed to the European theater. During the week long crossing the German forces surrendered and the war had ended. Elizabeth spent three years at various posts in England and Germany following the war.

She then continued her education with a post graduate course in obstetrics, which lead to a four year stint as the head nurse and supervisor at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in New Jersey.

At this point Elizabeth re-enlisted in the army and returned to Munich, Germany as head nurse in obstetrics. During her four years there, Elizabeth visited the many nearby countries of Europe whenever the chance to travel arose. Upon returning to the USA, she spent the next four years at Walter Reid General Hospital in Washington DC. There she was employed as the head nurse of obstetrics, and subsequently head nurse in recovery, where she tended to some of the hospitals earliest open heart surgery patients.

Elizabeth then continued her education with a course in Administrative Nursing at the Fort Sam Houston Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

Her next post was to a 100 bed MASH unit, North of Seoul, South Korea for a period of 15 months. This was followed up by a three year posting to the Pentagon Dispensary where Army, Navy and Air Force personnel were vaccinated before traveling overseas. While there, Elizabeth would be assigned to various missions for VIP's in which she was to stand by in case of medical emergencies. One such notable assignment was to President Kennedy's funeral where she stood across from Charles DeGaulle and other dignitaries.

Elizabeth continued her education by completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the University of Omaha in Nebraska, and then a Masters in Hospital Administration through the University of Baylor in Waco, Texas. She then spent a couple of years at Valley Forge Army hospital in Pennsylvania working at the comptrollers office devising methods of improving nursing techniques. In January of 1969 Elizabeth began a one year assignment as the head nurse of a 400 bed MASH evacuation hospital in Chu Lai, Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam, her final post was to the Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco.

During her career, she became the most senior Canadian nurse in the US Army Nurse Corps. She retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1970, after 20 years of service. At this time she returned to the family farm in Point La Nim to help care for her aging mother, and subsequently her brother Duncan. She lived in and maintained the large family home which she dearly loved until the age of 93, when she realized it was time to move to Rose's Special Care home due to mobility issues. She lived there until March 2016, when a move to Dalhousie Nursing Home became necessary.

Over the years, Elizabeth enjoyed her weekly Bridge games as well as visiting with family and friends who routinely dropped into the kitchen for enjoyable discussions on everything from politics to the latest gossip around town. She enjoyed talking with all who stopped by. Everyone who knew her would be aware of her witty sense of humour and distinctive laugh. She enjoyed a good laugh. She had an amazing memory for the history of the people and stories from the surrounding area. Elizabeth's compassion for others continued through her retirement as is evidenced by the many hours spent volunteering at the thrift shop of the United Church in Dalhousie, as well as the sponsoring of numerous foster children over many decades. She will be dearly missed.

Elizabeth will be fondly remembered by her sister Jean Church and sisters-in-law Joan and Coleen MacGarvie, as well as several nieces and nephews with special mention, Mary Reid and good friend Pierrette Cormier. Elizabeth was pre-deceased by her siblings, Weston (Phyllis), Grace, Duncan "Budd", Margaret (Harold Reid), William and John.
