Charles S. Arseneau

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Charles SimonArseneau of Glencoe, NB which occurred at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on July 22, 2016 while he was surrounded by his loving family. Charles was 94.

Born in Glencoe, he was the son of the late Louis Arseneau and the late Elizabeth (Murray) Arseneau. Charlie had many careers, wearing many different hats in his long life. He was a logger in Northern Quebec, and early on, he also sold groceries in the back of his 2-ton truck going door to door from Upsalquitch to Glen Levit to Flatlands. He owned a general store in Glencoe for many years selling not only groceries, but stoves, fridges, chainsaws, televisions, washers and dryers and ski-doos. He was post-master for the area for over two decades and drove mail to the St- Arthur area for many years. He owned and operated Esso Imperial gas tanks and a garage for small auto repairs. He also drove taxi. In 1947, he built a house where he and Margaret raised their six children. Charlie was forever putting his carpentry skills to use by helping others: building a house in Glen Levit for his son Lewis, and a cottage for his daughter Phyllis in Richibucto.

In 1977 he decided to build another home and moved across the field to do so. Being no stranger to hard work, Charlie was also the original Mr. Fix-it. There was nothing he couldn't do!

After selling his business in the 1970's he started driving school buses. Charlie particularly loved this job as it combined the enjoyment of driving with the function of helping children get an education- something that he truly believed in. On many occasions he drove all over New Brunswick taking groups on special outings.

His strong Conservative leanings led him in another direction and he became very active in the community and the province. He participated in many committees, travelling from Fredericton to Ottawa as required. At one time, he was special assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs in Fredericton.

The sun and sand of Florida beckoned in the 80's and he and Margaret spent winters in Fort Myers for several wonderful years. Their love of travelling extended to Jamaica, other islands, and a bus tour to the Calgary Stampede. In the late 80’s they even spent two weeks in Venezuela with two of their daughters, Phyllis and Marjorie, where they and their families celebrated a Spanish style Christmas. When not working or travelling the world, Charlie also enjoyed the simpler things in life such as: playing cards (5 cents a game), fishing, hunting, and canoeing. Charlie also square-danced in many contests and loved his flower garden.

He attended St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Glen Levit and was very proud to be a 4th degree Knight of Colombus. He prayed to St. Anne on a regular basis and always observed her feast day by attending Mass in Listuguj. It is fitting that he will be laid to rest on St. Anne day, July 26.

His little dog, Roxy who filled a big void in his life since Margaret’s passing in 2010, will miss Charlie dearly. At precisely 8:30pm every night, she would jump up on his knees for her daily rock and cuddle.

He is survived by his cherished daughters, Phyllis (Paul Smith), Elaine (John Wheeler), and Gina (Darren Matheson).

He was a loving and generous Grampie to Nicole and Claude Vautour, Johnny, Jeffrey and Gregory Wheeler, Jamie and Jenny LeBrun, Jason, Glen and Justin Arseneau, Cameron and Carlee Matheson. He was loved and admired by 14 great grandchildren, his son-in-law Gerald LeBrun of Campbellton, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Henry of Dalhousie.

He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Margaret (2010), daughter Marjorie (2011), sons Lewis (2011) and Richard (2016).
