Margaret (Pictou) LaBillois was a national symbol for the advancement of First Nation people throughout Canada. In 1939, LaBillois was the first resident of Eel River Bar First Nation to graduate from high school. After completing high school in Dalhousie, she trained to become a nurse at the Hotel Dieu in Campbellton. When the war broke out, she jumped at the chance to enlist in the women's division; to send money home to support her family and to do her part and get the boys home safe and fast but her brothers did not make it home. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAFWD) stationed in Ottawa and served as a photographer during World War2 by helping map
the Alaskan Highway. November 11th is a sad day for her because she remembers her brother and husband who serve in the war. In 1983 she graduated from Lakehead University with an Honours degree in Native Languages.
LaBillois had several opportunities to relocate but chose to stay in her home of Northern NB and work with those who needed her most. A mother of 14 children, two of them adopted, LaBillois is viewed by those in her community as a mother and grandmother to all. Her doors and kitchen were open to all, even non-natives from nearby communities.
As the first female ever to be elected Chief of a First Nation community in NB she served as Chief of Eel River Bar from 1971 to 1975. As Chief, she cultivated partnerships amongst aboriginals, non-aboriginals, government agencies and infividuals. LaBillois was a Mi'kmaq teacher at L.E. Reinsborough School from 1984 to 1990.
With an awareness of her own cultural value to her society, LaBillois strove to restore the Mi'kmaq language and many of its customs and crafts. One of the greatest achievements in her life was helping to teach the Mi'kmaq language to children and adults of the Eel River Bar community and therefore setting a precedent in other Mi'kmaq communities.
In 1995 she was a recipient of the Order of Canada in recognition of her leadership qualities and significant demonstration of traditional skills. For her commitment to the environment the Smithsonian Institution has recognized LaBillois for her work on a prooject tht provide protection for place and plants of historical value. In 2002 she received the Queen Golden Jubilee in recognition of her contributions of Canada. It is for a life devoted to others and especially to the aboriginal community of the Province of NB that Margaret (Pictou) LaBillois received the Order of NB in 2005. Aptjipeg, is the rebirth of traditional crafts , owned by LaBillois in Eel River Bar First Nation, was awarded the Aboriginal Entrepreneurship of the year award at the first annual Atantic Aboriginal Entrepreneur Awards banquet in 2005.
She enjoyed the Pow Wow trail, as it enables family and friends to celebrate, eat, dance and sing together. This special tradition has kept uss together and will continue to do so for future generations. She is and always will be the rock of our family and we are honoured to celebrate her life.
