John W. Vincent

The death of John W. Vincent of Charlo occurred suddenly at Campbellton Regional Hospital on Wednesday, January 2, 2002. Born in Charlo on September 29, 1911, he was the son of the late George Harry and Nancy (Skene) Vincent.

His wife, Thelma Thompson, predeceased him in 1992.

He is survived by three sons, Weldon of Halifax, N.S., Graham of Charlo and Lynn (Joann) of Saint John and three daughters, Joanne (Hubert) David of Charlo, Donna McEwen (John) of Eel River Cove and Peggy Arnold (Brian) of Fredericton. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The eldest in a family of 13, he is survived by three brothers, Donald (Edna) of Charlo, Lorne (Norma) of Ottawa, Glenford (Laurie) of Darmouth, N.S., and four sisters, Ethel Mann of Woodstock, Lillian Laakso (Watson) of the Restigouche Senior Citizens Home, Dalhousie, Leona Dumais (Marcel) of Ottawa and Joyce Mazerolle of Dalhousie as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A stationary engineer, he was retired from the NBIP Company in Dalhousie (now Bowater) where he was assistant superintendent in the steam plant. He was also a retired ship's surveyor for Lloyds of London insurance company.

A veteran of World War Two, he served on corvettes and minesweepers. When discharged, he held the rank of Chief petty Officer ER.

A devoted Mason for over 50 years, he was a past Master of Restigouche Lodge number 25, F&AM in Dalhousie; a Past District number 3; a member of the Royal Arts Chapter 11 of Campbellton; Past District Superintendent District number 3 Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of New Brunswick; A Knights Templar Trinity Preceptory number 67, Sovereign Great Priority of Canada; a Noble of Luxor Temple AAONMS and a member of the North Shore Shrine Club, He was also a member of Lodge St. John number 27 in Bathurst and an homourary member of Campbellton Lodge number 32 F&AM.

He was an accomplished craftsman and examples of his woodworking skills are evident throughout the province and across Canada as well as in Great Britain.

The remains were at MacMill's Funeral Home in Black Point. On Friday evening, Dalhousie Branch number 17 of the Royal Canadian Legion held a memorial service.

The funeral was held on Saturday, January 5, 2002 from St. Mary's Anglican Church, Dalhousie with Father Andrew Fraser officiating. Just prior to the service, Lady Alexander Chapter number 24 Order of the Eastern Star and Restigouche Lodge number 25 held memorial services. These were attended by members from the Miramichi, Bathurst, Dalhousie and Campbellton areas as well as other points in the province.

The recessional lament was given by son-in-law Piper Brian Arnold.

Pallbearers were Ralph Bain, Owen Firth, and Howard MacLean, all Masonic brethren, grandsons John McEwen and Liam Vincent and grandson-in-law Tom Brewer. Interment will be in New Mills in the spring.


Mathieu Cormier

The death of Mathieu Cormier of 7 Stanley Street, Campbellton, occurred at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on January 9, 2002 at the age of 85.

He was born in St. André de Madawaska, N.B. on February 26, 1916 to Joyime Cormier and Sophie Poitras.

He is survived by his wife, Luci-Anne Couturier; his daughters, Marie-Paule Cormier of Quebec, Francoise Cormier of Montreal and Lise Cormier (Everett LaPointe) of Campbellton; his sons, Louis Cormier and Bernard Cormier (Suzanne Senechal), both of McLeods; and seven grandchildren, Emmanuelle, Shawn Patrick, Robert, Pierre, Sylvie and Sophie. He was predeceased by his parents and his daughter, Monique (Denis D'Amour).

Funeral services were held from Notre Dames des Neiges, Campbellton on January 12 with Rev. Romeo Morrison officiating.


Rita Cormier

The death of Rita Cormier of Mitchell, widow of the late Albert Cormier, occurred January 7, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital, Dalhousie at the age of 81.

She was born in Bathurst to Joseph Edward Vienneau and Florence (Boudreau).

She had worked for a period of time as a postmistress and also as a school teacher in Mitchell. She attended St. Gabriel's Church and had served as organist and previous member of the choir. Rita and her husband were foster parents to many children over the years and she was greatly loved and respected in the community and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons Gabriel, Johnny and Frank, her sister Marie Degrechie and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers Anselme, Michel, Antoine and George and her sister Cecile.

Funeral services were held January 10 from St. Gabriel's Church with burial in the spring.

Pallbearers were Kerbie Doucet, Barry Hickey, Chester Culligan, Raymond Cormier, Don Cormier and Kenny Driscoll.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of MacMillan's Funeral Home, Black Point.


Yvonne Benoit Pelletier

The death of Mme Yvonne Benoit Pelletier of the Village Nursing Home, Campbellton, occured January 13, 2002 at the Campbellton Regional Hospital.

She was born in Neguac on April 2, 1914 to the late David Allain and Alice Cyr.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Benoit, and her second husband, Ludger Pelletier.

She is survived by her sons, Edouard (Claudette) Benoit of Pointe-ŕ-la-Croix, and Georges (Danielle) Benoit of St. Omer; sisters Augusine Godin of Lagaceville, NB., Gilberte Breau of Bathurst and Rev. Sister Albertine Allain of Bathurst; and a brother, Emile Allain of Neguac, NB.

Funeral services were held from Notre Dame des Neiges, Campbellton on January 15 with Rev. Romeo Morrison officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher's Funeral Home, Campbellton.


Douglas Weldon Harris

Douglas Weldon Harris passed away in Toronto, at the Toronto East General Hospital on December 30th, 2001, surrounded by loving family members and friends. He was born in Campbellton on August 25th 1928 the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Bessie Smith) Harris also of Campbellton. He was 73 years old at the time of his death. He will be greatly missed for his gentleness, kindness and humor by wife Janey (Alford) Harris of 49 years of Toronto, Ontario, daughters Elizabeth Jean Harris - (Stan) of Toronto, Ontario and Judith Lillian Murray, husband Frank of Tide Head, NB. Two granddaughtes Jessica Margaret Harris McNeil and (Donald) of Toronto, Ontario, Laura Ashley Trisha Murray of Tide Head, two great grandchildren, Corey and Celeste McNeil. Also survived by one brother Donald Harris (Bea) of Campbellton, sisters - Alice MacCallum of Moncton, Dorothy and husband Victor Berthelot of Toronto, Vera Wood and Elizabeth (Betty) Priestly Ontario.

His many nieces and nephews will also greatly miss him.

Douglas became a member of the RCR of Canada in Ontario on August 12, 1950.

Training for Special Forces in Washington DC., for his Tour of Duty in Korea that lasted for 13 months ending in September 1952. He received the following medals from the Governor General of Canada - the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea, others National Defense - United Nations Medal for time served in Korea Combat and Korean War medal. Letter of Thanks from the President of the Republic of Korea - Kim Dae-Jung. He proudly served his country, as did many of his family members in other wars. He remained a loyal Canadian and member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Campbellton Branch 19. He was also a member of the Korean War Veterans Association in Ontario.

While in New Brunswick he worked for Atlantic Wholesale, encountered many people along the Gaspe and New Brunswick borders. He worked a brief time for Canada Glaze Co. - later known as Rolland Paper Inc., before joining the effort in Korea, upon returning from Korea he returned to his job as a millworker for 40 years until retirement. He enjoyed the last years of his life spending memorial time with family and friends.

A Last Post Funeral for Douglas Weldon Harris was held on January 4, 2002 at the Giffen & Mack Funeral Home located in Toronto, Ontario. Music played by organist - In the Garden, Amazing Grace and Safe in the Arms of Jesus. Service by Rev. John Niles , reflected on Doug's gentle ways, his humor and poetic nature, over 50 family and friends attended the service. Friends and family later gathered to remember Doug at the Legion Branch NO. 11 Toronto. After cremation he will remain with family until burial in Campbellton in summer of 2002. A Legion Service will be preformed at that time. Donations, were made to the Heart, Stroke and Lung Associations.


Etta Elizabeth Cooling

The death of Etta Elizabeth Cooling of Atholville and formerly of Dawsonville, occurred at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on December 29, 2001 at the age of 74.

She was born in Glenlevit, NB on June 23, 1927 to Hugh Smith and Lila Firth.

She is survived by her dear friend Silas; sons Jim (Joan), Carl and Dennis (Lorraine); daughters Glenna and Della (Wade); half-brothers Gerald, Duncan, Ian and Billy; half-sisters Kitty, Christine, Susan, Jean, Angie and Marley and grandchildren Derek, Karyn, Jason, Cindy, Nicole, Crystal, Tiffany and Justin.

Besides her parents, She is survived by her husband Ralph, infant daughter Lila and brother Mac.

Funeral services were held December 31 from Maher's Funeral Chapen with Rev. Silas Matchett and Rev. William Morton officiating.

Honourary Pallbearers were Joe Hennigar, Scott Smith, Bryce Adams, Ronnie Hamilton, Fred Cooling and Malcolm Cooling.

The remains were placed in the Campbellton Rural Cemetery receiving vault with burial to take place in the spring at the Dawsonville Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher's Funeral Home, Campbellton.


Adrien Levesque

Relatives and friends were saddened to learn of the death of Adrien Levesque of Campbellton, husband of Reina Ouellette, which occurred at his home January 6, 2002 at the age of 64.

He is survived by his wife Reina and one daughter Joanne (Richard Ouellette), his sons, Ghislain, Denis, Marc (Rolande), Etienne, Lionel (Suzanne), Stephane (Lisa); his sisters Adrienne (Elie Mercier), Geraldine (Germain Frenette), Jeanette (Lucien Levesque); his brothers, Hilaire (Anne-Marie) and Leo-Paul (Gladys), 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral mass was held January 9, 2002 from Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur, Val d'Amour.

Active Pallbearers were Ghislain Levesque, Denis Levesque, Marc Levesque, Etienne Levesque, Lionel Levesque, Stephane Levesque and Marc Hachey.

Honourary pallbearers were Hilaire Levesque, Leo-Paul Levesque, Clermont Ouellette, Graydon Levesque, Richard Ouellette and Elie Mercier.

Funeral arrangements were placed in the professional care of Chaleur Funeral Home, 47 Alexander Street, Campbellton.
