Campbellton Graphic March 29, 1923
The first Greek christening ever performed in Campbellton took place here on Monday afternoon when the lively brigh-eyed twin sons of Mr. and Mrs.. Peter Pappadakis were baptized as George and John. By the Rev. Palicharis, a Greek clergyman of Montreal, who came to Campbellton to perform the ceremony. Mr. George Yeorgas of the Olympia Confectionery, and his brother Peter, Manager of the Princess, who are the boys' uncles, also took part in the ceremony, acting as what is known as the "best men". The Greek baptismal ceremony does not differ much from that of other denominations, except on one or two points. One of these is that the child, in being christened is immersed in water and oil. The reading of the prescribed service by the officiating priest occupies about three-quarters of an hour, so the ceremony is somewhat lenghty. Little George and John, who are about 5 months old, are enjoying the best of health. |
