First Telephone It was in 1889, the same year as the Town was incorporated that Campbellton had it's first private telephone system. This was a single line affair of the simplest nature connecting the office of Dr. D. Murray with the local drug store. It consisted of two small drums over the ends of which a covering of dry sheepskin was tightly stretched. By beating upon this tightly drawn leather surface the attention of the party at the other end was attracted, while a wire connected the two places and carried the conversation entrusted to it. A little later this antique contrivance was replaced with a bell telephone slightly more modern. This was also installed by Dr. Murray. As before, however, it connected to only two parties.
