Madeleine (Madge) E. FitzGerald
1920-2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Madeleine Elsie FitzGerald of Canterbury Court, Riverview formerly of Tide Head. She passed away Saturday January 7, 2012 at the Moncton Hospital.
Born in London England in 1920, she was the daughter of the late Reginald and Elsie (Mitchell) Rusbridge. She was a member of the St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Riverview and the ACW. Madge was a retired RNA and Dental Assistant. She was also a member of the War Brides of Canada.
Madge was an adventurous young woman. When WW11 broke out in Europe, she was too short to sign up for the reular military services so she joined the Land Army where she drove a tractor plowing the fields of farms in the South of England for the duration of the war. When we were children we would be so delighted when she borrowed a friend's tractor in Tide Head where we lived. She would come driving the tractor up the highway to plow our vegetable garden. We thought she was the best mum ever!
She lived her life for her family and being the kind and caring person that she was , could always be counted on for her love and support. Among her many joys in life were happy family gatherings. She was a wonderful knitter and a great walker. She was an excellent cook and gardener. She was certainly ahead of the times with her gardening as we remember her composting back when we were children. She loved to travel and crossed the ocean many times to visit her remaining family in England and had some lovely holidays with them on the continent. She managed to travel far afield in Canada as well with her husband. They spent some happy times in the Yukon with brother in law Beverly FitzGerald and his family.
She will be deeply missed by her three children; Lynne of Halifax, Danny (Donna) of Sackville and Wendy Hoyt (Eric) of Colpitts Settlement, six grandchildren: James, Patricia, Ryan, Meghan, Madeline and Kaleb. Two great grandchildren; Landyn and Vera, a brother Denny (Joe) and niece Judith (Mike) in England along with the remaining children of her sister Sylvia here in Canada and the USA.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband James (Do) in 1998, brothers Roy, Robbie, Jack and her sister Sylvia Dickson.
