When Jake was called into the Canadian army in 1942, Deen accompanied him to Red Deer and then Medicine Hat, Alberta. They returned to Geraldton in 1946. She was employed in later eyars as the much thought-of homemaker for the late Father G. E. DesFosses, former priest of the St Theresa Roman Catholic church. After leaving Geraldton permanently in 1968, Deen and Jake settled in Fort William. There she trained to become a Red Cross Homemaker and spent several years working with elderly patients. Deen and Jake eventually moved to Ottawa and then Toronto, to be closer to their children. Following Jake's passing in March, 1994, Deen relocated to Maple and spent the remainder of her retirement eyars in her comfortable Maple Manor appartment.

Gifted with a wondering singing voice, Deen was a member of the St Gabriel's Church choir in Jacquet River. She knew most of the popular/hit songs of her day and sang at family & other social gatherings in Geraldton, with Jake accompanying her on the guitar. Her home was the drop-in center for friends and neighbours and she always had a freshly-brewed pot of coffee sitting on the stove. Neighbourhood children were similarly always welcomed. She was also known for her pastry - pies being her specialty. Deen enjoyed listening to her collection of records, bowling, shuffleboard, playing bingo and social card games, watching televised baseball games, doing word search puzzles and visiting with relatives and friends.

She provided a very warm, comfortable and loving home for her family and was an exceptionally kind and giving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed, but will be remembered forever in our hearts.
