Barbara (Poole) Jaques

Died peacefully at Campbellton Regional Hospital on Feb. 19, 2010, Barbara Vera Drake (Poole) Jaques, formerly of Dalhousie, NB, and since October, of Wisdom Manor, Campbellton, NB.

Born Jan. 18, 1923 at the family homestead in West Paradise, NS, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Gwendoline (Cow’d) Poole. She was raised by her mother in New Jersey, USA and Wolfville, NS, where she graduated from Horton Academy and attended Acadia University. In 1941 she married the late William “Bill” Jaques of Sydney Mines, NS. They made their home in Dalhousie, NB where Bill worked in the paper mill, and were married for 60 years before his sudden death on their wedding anniversary in 2001. She is survived by her children, Margaret “Peggy” (Rev. Arnold) Godsoe of Campbellton, NB; Iris (David) Cosh of Kingsburg, NS; William (Lorraine) of Mira Gut, NS; and Timothy, of Dalhousie, NB.

She is also survived by her grandchildren Ian Cosh of Toronto, ON and Dr. Sarah Cosh of Fredericton, NB; Marlene (Floyd) Reddick and Cathy (Ken) Jennings; great-granddaughters Jana and Jessica Reddick and Candice and Britaney Courtney, and by her great-great grandson Anthony Courtney.

She is survived by her sisters, Gwendolyn (late Glen) Ells, of Greenwich, NS; Patricia (late Reuben) Vartanian of Buffalo, NY; and Margaret Rose Ashley of Bedford, NS; her brother Roy Malcolm “Mickey” (Carol) Murphy of Halifax, NS; and by numerous nephews and nieces.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister Iris (late Eben) Miller of Shubenacadie, NS, and her brother Fred (Charlotte) Allen, of Stewiacke, NS. She returned to university in the 1960s, getting degrees from NSTC, UNB, and Queen’s University. She supply taught before working full-time as a teacher and librarian at DRHS, Dalhousie, NB. She loved life, travel, and her family and friends. She loved music and was a member of the former Dalhousie Music Club, and of the Chaleur Echoes. Her house was full of books, and she possessed every book written by Anthony Trollope, her favorite author. She loved all animals, domestic and wild, but particularly her many cats over the years. She was deeply religious and missed no opportunity to attend church services, even in her final infirmity. She was a member both of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Dalhousie, NB and Christ Church Anglican, Campbellton, NB.

A special thanks to the staff of Wisdom Manor in Campbellton, NB and the staff of the Campbellton Regional Hospital, particularly those on the palliative care ward, for trying hard to make her last days comfortable. Thanks also to those thoughtful enough to visit her during the past few years when she could not leave her home on her own. It meant a great deal to her to be remembered with a visit.

Cremation was in care of Savoie Funeral Home, Campbellton, NB. A local funeral communion service will be held later in the spring, with interment of ashes in Sydney Mines, NS later alongside those of her husband. Donations in her memory may be made to the Restigouche SPCA 165 Bay Breeze Road, Dalhousie, NB E8C 1E4..

Alphonse Maltais

Passed away at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on January 2, 2010 at the age of 76, Mr. Alphonse Maltais of Eel River Crossing. Born in Eel River Crossing, he was the son of Fidele Maltais and the late Stella Lavallee.

Alphonse worked as a longshoreman for over 40 years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and being outdoors. He was a very generous man, enjoyed being with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed.

He leaves to mourn his three sons Gerald (Denise Soucy), Lionel "Nounoute", and Denis (Jackie Richard), brothers & sisters Henri, Albert, Mirilda , Emilienne, Ida, Joe, Therese and Robert, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his wife Jeannine Johnson, several brothers and sisters.

The funeral mass was held from St Trinity Church Eel River Crossing.

Margaret Bernard

The death of Margaret Bernard of Dalhousie Nursing Home & formerly of Benjamin occurred at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on Monday, Feb 15, 2010 at the age of 85. Born in Nash Creek, she was the daughter of the late Jeremy LaPointe & the late Annie (Hickie).

She is survived by her sons: Gerald (Monique) of Jacquet River, Gussie (Andrea) of Bathurst. Allison (Angie) of Benjamin, Don of Dalhousie, Ronnie of Benjamin, Wayne of Campbellton, Kevin (Gayna) of Benjamin, Barry (Lilly) of Benjamin, Darrel (Lilly) of Calgary, Daughters; Florence Branning (Shane) of Dalhousie, Valerie Perry of Bathurst, Sheila Gagnon (Johnny) of Fredericton, Brenda Landry (Sylvain) of St Omer, thirty six Grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren & two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Arthur & Plus as well as her sisters Juanita, Patricia & Jenny.

She was predeceased by her husband Delphis, son Emile, three infant children & brothers Joseph, Leo, Osmond & Thomas.

Her funeral was held from St Joseph Church, Nash Creek.

Mrs Gertrude Jamieson

Mrs. Gertrude Jamieson, 94, wife of the late Kenneth Preston Jamieson, formerly of Rough Waters Dr., Bathurst, passed away on Sunday (February 21, 2010) at the Foyer Notre Dame de Lourdes, Bathurst.

Born in Charlo, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Lena (Miller) Hamilton.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxilary of the Herman J. Good, VC Br 18, Royal Canadian Legion, the NB Retired Teachers Association and was a member of the First United Church, Bathurst.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She will be sadly missed by three children, Wesley of Davidson, Australia, Ralph of Bathurst and Beverly Jamieson of Toronto, ON; three grandchildren, Kelsey, Joel & Spenser of Australia; several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude was a former school teacher at the former Bass River and Mary Gosnell School for many years. She was a member of the First United Church, Bathurst and the Retired Teachers Association.

Margaret Grace Gerrard

Margaret Gerrard died peacefully on February 16, 2010 at Toronto in her 92nd year. Margaret was born at Campbellton, NB in 1918. With her parents Peter A. Gerrard and M. Jessie Gerrard, Marg moved to Toronto. She attended Toronto Teacher's College, then the University of Toronto where she received her Bachelor of Arts and where her Master of Education degreee was conferred with first class honours. Marg began teaching at Whitechurch, Ont, taught Primary School in East York for many years, then left teaching for a full-time writing career. Marg worked closely with John McInnes and others to edit and write many classroom guidebooks for teachers and introductory books for young readers including Surprises, The Toy-Box, Mr. Whiskers and Treats and Treasures. Some are still in use in classrooms.

Marg combined her lover of travel and teaching with her gift for photography. She visited 88 countries and brought her trips alive with illustrated lectures in schools and libraries.

For her friends and for her cousins by the dozens, Marg leaves fond memories of an enquiring mind, great kindness and a generous spirit. We are grateful for the care given Marg in recent times by the staff of Chester Village. At Margaret's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation will be followed by interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.

Adeline Martin

At the Campbellton Regional Hospital on Monday, February 22, 2010 at the age of 74, passed away Mrs. Adeline Martin of Atholville, wife of Mr. Benoit J. Martin and late Alfred Lagace. Born in Atholville, she was the daughter of the late Victor Doiron and the late Marie Rose Hilda Martin.

She will be sadly missed by her husband Benoit J. Martin of Atholville; her children; Rachel Maltais (Regis) of Tide head, Nathalie Levesque (David) of Atholville, Rene Martin of Atholville and Josee LeBlanc (Serge) of Dalhousie; her grandchildren Patrick, Melanie, Jean-Mathieu, Myriam-Isabel, Karine-Emilie, Maryska and Megan; her great-grandchildren; Kaylee, Emily and Kaleb; her sisters and her brother; Hectorine Rusk (Tommy) of Toronto, Therese Mercier (Donald) of Campbellton, Noella Martin of Atholville, Regina Boudreau (Jean-Paul) of Campbellton, Rejeanne Blanchard (Wallace) of Dalhousie and Rene Doiron (Amanda) of Campbellton. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and friends.

She was predeceased by her daughter Brigitte, her sister Rina and her brothers; Leo and Roland.

Funeral was held from our Lady of Lourdes Church Atholville.
