John Haywood Jr.

Well known salmon fishing aficionado, John Haywood Jr, passed away suddenly during the weekend of March 7th after a long illness in Matapedia. John, baptized Zbigniew Halewyj, was born in Lodz, Poland in 1947.

Trained as a machinist in Lodz, John developed a passion for salmon fishing which he indulged in his spare time. He travelled far as he developed an expertise in fly fishing. At the same time he learned the art of tying salmon flies. Numerous rivers were tested by John with his Spey rod and hand-tied flies.

In the early 1980's John and his wife Teresa Hajewyh decided to leave Poland when conditions became very poor. Pretending to be taking a vacation in the west, they escaped from Poland to Austria, and spent a year in a refugee camp there.

When a daughter, Berta, was born, the family decided to immigrate to Canada. After a brief stint working at a remote fishing camp at Lake Temegami near North Bay, John and Teresa decided to relocate to Thunder Bay. Teresa stayed and found work in Thunder Bay, while John explored further, going to Vancouver. After fishing every river in BC, John returned to his family in Thunder Bay, Ont.

In the following years John fished rivers from as far north as Alaska to the southernmost reaches of South America in Tierra del Fuego. It was at this time that he discovered the Restigouche and Matapedia Rivers. John had found his home.

While in Matapedia, he developed numerous contacts in the salmon fishing world. Borrowing from his skills as machinist, he designed and put into production the Governor's salmon fishing reel, which was dedicated to another Matapedia legend, the late Richard Adams.

During his productive years in Matapedia, John was the impetus behind the annual salmon fishing tournament held for several years. Not only did he design the trophy for the tournament, he found sponsors who would underwrite the costs associated with the tournament.

Machinist, salmon fisherman, bridge player extraordinaire, raconteur, poet, John was a renaissance man who will not be forgotten.

His widow, Teresa and daughter, Berta invite all John's friends to attend a celebration of his life at Saint Laurent de Matapedia Church this coming summer.
