Gordon John Thompson
The death of Gordon John Thompson, resident of Tide Head, occurred at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on March 5, 2005, at the age of 94.
Gordon was born on July 12, 1910, to the late William Thompson and Lillian (Law).
Gordon enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Montreal in 1941. He was one of seven brothers serving overseas; the largest single family representation in Canada at the time. Among his wartime duties, Gordon was assigned the task of mapping the King's route to safety in Dover prior to D-Day, an invasion which he subsequently took part in.
A well known local artist, Gordon began drawing at an early age. After his army discharge, he was encouraged to enrol in an art course by Dr. Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven. He opted to return home, where he worked as a timber cruiser, draftsman and cut inspector for N.B.I.P. Most of Gordon's paintings were inspired by memories of working in logging camps in the lage 20's and 30's. He also designed numerous commercial art projects, including both the Campbellton and Tide Head municipal crests. His paintings were featured province-wide on all NBTEL Telephone directories in 1991-1992.
Gordon was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Gillis); as well as by his six brothers and four sisters: Frederick, William, Merle, Patrick, John, Gerald, Jeannette (Arseneau), Jean (Grandby), Francis (Oliver), and Florence.
He will be sadly missed by his daughters: Mary Legacy of Tide Head and Ann Thompson of Grand Forks, BC; as well as by his four grandchildren: Tammy Legacy (Ewen Cameron) of Rothesay, Tanya Legacy of Moncton, Tricia Legacy of Riverview and Tyler Bidnyk of Grand Forks, BC; and his great grandson: Robbie Cameron of Rothesay.
The funeral was held at the St. Andrews United Church in Tide Head on March 9, 2005, and was officiated by Mr. Wendell Gregan, LPM. Pallbearers were: Tom Dewar, Ron Dube, Bob Gerrard, Everett Porter, Chris Roberts and John Woodworth. Interment will take place at a later date in the Campbellton Rural Cemetery.
