Fr. Bernard M. Broderick
19103 - 2006

Fr. Bernard Broderick, 92, of 113 Wellington St., Miramichi, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at the Miramichi Regional Hospital. Born December 8, 1913 at Kedgwick, New Brunswick, son of the late Michael Bernard Broderick and Isabella MacDonald, he was the second youngest of nine children. He is survived by his sister, Gertrude Mahoney, Moncton, several nephews, nieces, and cousins, great nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and nieces. Predeceased by sisters; Kathleen, Mary Elizabeth, Marie Margaret, Sr. Martha Michael, Isobel Mary, Patricia Cecilia and brother, John Broderick. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1935 and attended Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax, NS, and was ordained in Kedgwick October 15, 1939. His first Parish was at St. Thomas Aquinas, Campbellton, where he was Assistant Pastor. He became Assistant Pastor at St. Michael's, Chatham from 1942-1947, and from there, taught High School at his beloved St. Thomas in Chatham from 1947-1956. Following his years of teaching he became Pastor at St. Patrick's in Nelson from 1956-1970, Pastor at Sts. Simon & Jude in Nackawic from 1970-1973, Pastor at St. Michael's from 1973-1982 and administrator at St. Margaret's Parish from 1982-1988.

Father Broderick obtained an Honorary Degree, "Doctor of Laws", in 1990 from St. Thomas University, and established a Bachelor of Education Program at St. Thomas University, was a founding member of Miramichi Big Bothers Big Sisters, Chaplain for Knights of Columbus Chapter 1219, Miramichi, and also Chaplain of Mount St. Joseph. In later years he offered daily mass at St. Michael's Convent. The Province of New Brunswick honored him with the Minister's Award of Heritage, he obtained a Certificate of Merit from Military Vicariate of Canada, named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International and was made Freeman of the Town of Chatham. Father Broderick was a driving force behind the Beaubear Co-Op Housing Development, Beaubear Credit Union and the Beaubear Co Operative in Nelson Miramichi. He was instrumental in raising funds for the Father Bruny Project to build a water cistern in Haiti, and was an avid supporter of Social Justice programs. He was presented a graduation ring by the Alumni of St. Francis Xavier in 2004 and played a leading role in establishing and maintaining St. Michael's Museum & Genealogical Centre. He was a promoter and supporter of the Irish Cultural Society and the Irish Festival.

Father Broderick was author of two well received books; "Memories of Kedgwick River" and "The Catholic Church in the Maritimes".

Fr. Bernard Broderick rested at Maher's Funeral Home, Miramichi, on Wednesday and Thursday, April 26 & 27 and was transferred to St. Michael's Basilica, where he laid in state on Thursday. Mass of Chirstian burial was celebrated on Friday April 28, 2006, at St. Michael's Basilica, Miramichi. Interment was in St. Michael's Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters, Saint Michael's Museum or the memorial of ones choice would be appreciated by the family.

Boyd Nichol

The death of Boyd Nichol of Campbellton occurred on April 29, 2006. He was 51 years of age. Boyd was the son of the late Hazel Nichol (Keough) and the late Walter Nichol.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Currie, his daughter, Heather, sisters, Marilyn Hanley (Fred), Sharon Hickey (Gary), Julie Seliske (Mike) and brothers, Jim Nichol and Bill Nichol, and many nieces and nephews.

Boyd will be remembered for his gentle wit, his loving and warm nature, his devotion to family and the strength of his character. At the time of his death, he was employed at the AV Cell Mill in Atholville where he had worked for 33 years. He was a gifted athlete, playing on many winning hockey teams and on baseball teams that were inducted into the Bathurst and the Campbellton Sport Halls of Fame. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed curling and skiing. He coached the Sugarloaf Senior High School Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball Team. He loved his family and friends, the Restigouche River and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The funeral will be held from First United Church in Campbellton at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3rd. Arrangements are with Maher's Funeral Home, Campbellton.

DRAPEAU, Gisele Marie Agnes (Savoie)

DRAPEAU, Gisele Marie Agnes (Savoie) - 64, Porter's Lake, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.

Born in Dundee, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Honore Savoie and Catherine (Durette).

She is survived by her husband, Harry; sons, Kenneth (Dawn Roma), Porter's Lake; Jean-Louis (Leanne), West Chezzetcook; grandchildren, Evan, Guy, Hayley, Julien, Cameron, Gabrielle and Amy, brothers, Yvon (Yvonne), Lucien, Jean-Guy (Clare), Raymond (Paulette), Denis (Micheline), Richard of New Brunswick; and sisters, Yvette (Jean Lauriault), Monique (Charles Walton), Florida and Marthe of New Brunswick. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She adored her grandchildren and always had a sweet treat ready for them. She enjoyed being around people and made friends easily. Anyone who met her couldn't help but like her. Throughout her life she was always lending a hand or offering kind words. She was a very compassionate person and spent many hours volunteering at the Birches in Musquodoboit Harbour as well as the Canadian Cancer Society. She was an active member of the PLSC. Gisele will be greatly missed by her family.

Special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at 5.1 CVICU for their tremendous care throughout these last several months. Also to Deacon Oehmen who has been a great support to the family.

Visitation to be held in Rowlings Funeral Home, Musquodoboit Harbour on Tuesday, May 2 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral to be held on Wednesday, May 3 at 10 a.m. in St. Anselm's Catholic Church, West Chezzetcook. Reception to follow in church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Edward "Eddie" LeBlanc
1939 - 2006

At the Campbellton Regional Hospital on Monday, April 24th at the age of 69 passed away Eddie (Edward LeBlanc) husband of Jeannine Landry from Dalhousie. He is the son of the late Celina and Louis LeBlanc.

Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn a daughter Cécile Valdron (Gilles) from Dundee and one son Raymond LeBlanc (Judy) from Balmoral, 4 grandchildren; Roch Valdron, Rémi Valdron, Kevin LeBlanc and Manon LeBlanc. Three sisters ; Carmen Arseneault, Bathurst; Aline Lagacé, Val d'Amour, Céline Arseneault, Petit Rocher; four brothers; Louis LeBlanc, Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Daniel LeBlanc, Dalhousie, John LeBlanc, Charlo and Claude LeBlanc, Dalhousie.

The funeral was held from St. John Baptist Church, Dalhousie on April 27th at 11am with Father Doiron officiating.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher's Funeral Home, Dalhousie.

Jeannette Laxton
1917 - 2006

Passed away at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on April 21st, 2006 at the age of 88, Mrs. Jeannette Laxton wife of the late Edmond Laxton. Born in Campbellton on June 10, 1917, she is the daughter of the late Larry Isaac and the late Margaret Gray.

She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Wanda (Donald) Cyr of Campbellton and by her grandchildren Gilbert Cyr, Jeannette Murphy, Tanya Lirette and Carma Claridge all from Campbellton.

The funeral service was held from Maher's Funeral Chapel, Campbellton, on Monday April 24, 2006 at 11am.

Ninian H. Firth
1921 - 2006

Ninian Firth passed away on Tuesday, April 18th, 2006 at the Campbellton Regional Hospital at the age of 84. Born in Robinsonville on August 16th, 1921, he is the son of the late Hudson Firth and the late Sarah (Harris) Firth.

He is survived by two sons: Arden (Christine), Barrie, ON and Donald Boddle of Squaw Cap; 3 sisters Lydia Murray and Mona Murray from Robinsonville and Mary Prickett from Calgary, AB; one brother Edward from Robinsonville. He was a wonderful grandfather to 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Bertie) Murray, infant daughter, son John (Jack) Boddle, sister Vera and brother Albert.

Ninian served his country during the Second World War and was a member of the Campbellton Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19. After his retirement from the Provincial Hospital, where he worked as a M.R. counsellor for many years, he enjoyed his garden, flowers and many hours of reading.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Aaron Firth, Scott Boddle, Bob Boddle, Troy Boddle and nephews Timmy Murray and Eddie Firth.

Honorary pallbearers were Don Harris, Donald Murray, Marvin Thomas, Craig Murray, Vernon McDavid and Alden Marshall.

Funeral service was held from Maher's Funeral Chapel on Saturday April 22nd, 2006 at 11am.

Rev. Arnold Godsoe officiating. Interment in the Robinsonville Community cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher's Funeral Home, Campbellton.
