Rev. J. Emile Fournier

Former Pastor at Nash Creek

Dies in 90th year

Rev. J. Emile Fournier, beloved former Pastor of St. Joseph's Parish in Nash Creek and Our lady of the Visitation Parish in Benjamin River, died at Bathurst Regional Hospital on Tuesday, March 5, 2002. He was 89.

Father Fournier was the son of the late Theotime Fournier and his wife, Philomene (Doucet) Fournier.

Father Fournier did his primary studies in Pointe-Verte and at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Convent in Dalhousie. After secondary studies at Saint Joseph's University in Memramcook, he attended Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax for his theological studies. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in Petit-Rocher on May 21, 1939 and was then appointed curate in that same parish.

In July, 1940, he became a patient at Vallée-Lourdes Sanatorium while doing weekend ministry in Pointe-Verte until July, 1941. He was then appointed chaplain at Vallée-Lourdes Sanatorium and later appointed to the same function at the Hotel-Dieu Hospital in Campbellton. From 1945-46 he was re-appointed chaplain at Vallée-Lourdes Sanatorium in Bathurst.

He was then appointed pastor in the following parishes: Beaverbrook (1946-50); Nash Creek and Benjamin River-New Mills (1950-54); Bertrand (1954-64); Sheila (1964-67); East Bathurst (1967-71); Sacred Heart Cathedral (1971-78).

In 1978 he retired and took up residence at Vallée-Lourdes. In 1998 he moved to Villa Chaleur in Bathurst.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Senator Michel, Rhéal, Théodule and Leonard, and sisters Marie and Patricia.

Several nieces and nephews survive.

The remains rested at Verret's Funeral Chapel, Nigadoo, on Wednesday, March 6. On Thursday, March 7, the remains rested at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Pointe-Verte with a Funeral Mass at 7 p.m. celebrated by the Pastor, Rev. Alderic Roy, assisted by Rev. Lionel Comeau, Chancellor of the Diocese of Bathurst, and Rev, Gustave Le Gresley, C.J.M, of Bathurst. The homily was delivered by Father Roy.

On Friday, March 8, the body rested at St. Polycarpe's Church in Petit-Rocher until the Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. celebrated by Most Rev. André Richard, C.S.C., Bishop of Bathurst with a capacity congregation.

Among Clergy attending from the Diocese of Saint John were Rev. Bernard J. Broderick, retired pastor of St. Michael's Basilica Parish in Miramichi and a seminary classmate of Father Fournier; Rev. Henry W. McGrath, retired professor at St. Thomas University; and Rev. Leon Creamer, Pastor of St. Patrick's Parish, Miramichi.

Local Restigouche clergy attending included Rev. Wesley Wade, Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Campbellton, and St. Anthony's in Glen Levit; Rev. Roméo Morrison, Pastor of Our Lady of the Snows Parish, Campbellton, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Atholville, and Mary Queen Parish, Richardsville; and Rev. Edmond Chamberlain, Pastor of St. John Bosco Parish, Dalhousie.

The remains were placed in the crypt of the parish cemetery. Arrangements were in the care of Verret's Funeral Home and Chapel of Nigadoo.

Rev. Ronald Quenneville

Noted Educator in Jacquet River
Dies in Toronto at age 76

It was announced in The Catholic Register, March 10, 2002, that Rev. Ronald Quenneville, S.D.B, a member of the Salesian Fathers, died in Toronto, February 19, 2002. He was 76.

Father Quenneville, who had served for several years at the former Don Bosco College in Jacquet River, was a noted orator and educator. He had many friends in Restigouche County.

A priest for 48 years - 25 of them in Toronto - He had been ordained to the priesthood in 1954. Father Quenneville's priestly ministry included serving as a teacher, administrator, director, chaplain and associate pastor in New York, New Brunswick and Quebec before arriving in Toronto in 1977.

Father Quenneville's first posting in Toronto was as chaplain at Father Henry Carr High School where he served until 1983. From there, he moved on to St. Benedict's Parish in Etobicoke where he was associated pastor. Father Quenneville's Funeral Mass was held on February 22 at St. Benedict's and he was interred at St. Francis of Assisi cemetery in Montreal.

Lionel (Bud) Matheson

The death of Lionel Bud Matheson of 55 Thompson Road, Campbellton, occurred at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on March 7, 2002.

He was born in Campbellton on June 2, 1927.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Belliveau Matheson; his daughters, Anne Quaddling (Ed) of British Colombia, Merie Bertin (Guy) of Moncton and Jane Parker (Barry) of Campbellton; his sons, Charles (Elaine) Matheson, Wayne Matheson, Mike (Del) Matheson and Trevor Matheson, all of Campbellton; his sister, Margaret Green of the Northwest Territories; brothers Westley Doucet and Robert Doucet, both of Ontario, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Charlie and Olive Belliveau, and his mother, Eva (Matheson) Doucet.

Funeral services were held from Mary Queen Church, Campbellton, on March 11 with Rev. Romeo Morrison officiating. Interment in McLeods.

Pallbearers were his sons, Charles, Wayne, Mike and Trevor and also Guy Bertin and Barry Parker.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher's Funeral Home, Campbellton.

Saturday March 9, 2002 Bob Lambert age 64. Loving husband of Shirley Johnson. Dear father of Timothy (Barbara) of Guelph, Kevin (Lynn_ and Rev. Fr. Lee Lambert of Ottawa. Proud papa of Matthew, Jonathan, James, Erika and Aaron. Survived by sisters Zelma (late Gordie Lackey), Shirley (John Smith) and brothers William, Darrell (Colleen) and Gary (Shirley).

Son of the late Beatrice Cooper and Charles Lambert.

Predeseased by brothers Chuck (Betty) and Richard Lambert. Friends paid respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 585 Somerset St., Ottawa.

Funeral Wednesday to St. Thomas the Apostle Anglican Church for Service at 1 p.m. Interment Beechwood Cemetery. In Memoriam donations to the Heart and Stroke foundation appreciated.
