Ora Adeline Abraham

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and aunt, Ora Abraham, who left us, after a brief decline, on Monday, September 29, 2008, at the age of 93. Ora met this, as she had all things, with a plan, and with the same resolve, humour, and courage that had so characterized her life. She was born in the Restigouche valley, in Sillarsville, Quebec April 11, 1915. Although she left while young, it was a place she returned to throughout her life, and it is where her remains will rest. A woman of many gifts and accomplishments, Ora broke new ground as the first woman to be appointed administrative secretary of the Eastern District of Kiwanis International, where she worked until she retired to care for her husband, Robert. In the years after his death she built a new life, traveling widely and spending time in Florida, Sillarsville and Victoria with her beloved friend and sister, Dorothy. She settled in Victoria in 2002 at Rose Manor, where she will be remembered for her generosity, her style, her gift for friendship and her unfailing good humour. Ora was predeceased by her husband, Robert; by her parents, William Ryan and Louise Ferguson Ryan, and by her ten brothers, and sisters, Duncan, Elizabeth, Alexander (Sandy), Isabel, Mary, Dorothy, Fred, Max, Bill and Irving (Biggie). She is remembered with gratitude and deep affection by her nephews and nieces, Sandy, Michael, Mary and Bobby Ryan, Sandra Ryan and her daughter Katelyn, Dana Ferguson, Mary Jane Maffini, John Merchant, Judith Gibson and Patricia Ryan, by their children and partners and by the many other family members and friends she touched throughout her life. We are grateful for the caring support provided to Ora by the staff of Rose Manor, by her dear friend Betty Penney, who was there to assist her at the end, and by the nurses and staff of the palliative response team who made her last days so much easier. Ora was a force for good in this world, giving generously, caring deeply and touching the lives of many people she met. She will be deeply missed. A celebration of Ora's life will be held in Sillarsville, Quebec in the summer of 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ryan Family Fund, which Ora created to underwrite the university education of outstanding high school graduates from New Brunswick. Contributions should be made in the name of the fund directly to the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, 460 Richmond Street West, Suite 502, Toronto, ON M5V 1Y1.
