Margaret Rose Heinstein
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Margaret Rose Heinstein (Pearce) of Dalhousie, NB on December 3, 2007 at the Campbellton Regional Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Ft. Fairfield, Maine, Rose was the daughter of the late George and Kathleen Pearce, and wife of Karl Heinstein.
Rose spent her early years in Bathurst, graduating from Bathurst High School, and then attending Mount St. Vincent in Halifax, NS. She worked in the Engineering Dept. of the Bathurst Power and Paper Co. before moving to Fredericton to work at U.N.B. in the Harriet Irving Library.
After her marriage Rose lived in LaTuque and Harrington, QC before moving to Dalhousie.
Rose had a deep faith and was always generous and caring to the less fortunate, spending many hours visiting the sick and giving encouragement to cancer patients (even some she didn't know). She was well known for her "care packages", writing notes and sending cards to so many.
Music was Rose's great joy. She loved to play the piano and organ, and gave so freely of her time and talent, playing many accompaniments for solos and choirs. She was organist and choir director at her church, St. John Bosco. She taught piano privately as well as music in the school system. She had a great rapport with her students.
Because of Rose's kindness and community involvement, she received many prestigious awards: Citizen of the Year (Dalhousie), the rotary Club's Paul Harris Award, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award, Certificate of Merit and Medal of courage, and Citation of Merit from the Canadian Cancer Society for her significant contribution to the Canadian Cancer Society. Her work included Unit Education Chair, Past President, and Member of Division Patient Services Committee. In particular, Rose was instrumental in initiating a support group in her unit, and has been an inspiration to others as Coordinator for Reach for Recovery and Cansurmount. She has offered her valuable time, skills and leadership to enhance the lives of many people living with cancer.
Rose's greatest love was her family, in addition to her loving and caring husband, Karl, she is survived by three sons: John, Fredericton, NB; Paul (Laurie), Phoenix, Az., and Charles (Kelly), Halifax, NS; four adorable grandchildren: Pearce, Zachary, Zoe and Nathan; Twin brother, Bob (Murielle), London, Ontario, sister, Mary Rioux, Fredericton, NB, sister-in-law, Ursula Engeler (Reinhold), brother-in-law, Paul (Hanni) of Germany as well as two nieces, Jacqueline Rioux, Joane Hipwell, and four nephews, Brian and Darryl Pearce and Stephen and George Rioux; and special Maine cousins.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate Rose's life was held on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 11:00 am at St. John Bosco Church. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher's Funeral Home, Dalhousie.
