J. Coleman Walsh
31 May 1911-2 August 2002

Passed on in his ninety-first year in the early morning of August 2nd at St-Ann’s Veterans`Hospital, St-Anna-de Bellevue, Quebec, to which he had moved from Dalhousie only six weeks earlier. Though a victim of Parkinson’s disease for the last five years, his death came suddenly, perhaps mercifully so for a man of such determined self-sufficiency.

Born in Nash Creek, NB, on 31 May, 1911, son of Frank Walsh (``handsomest man in Restigouche County``) and Mary Burns, he met and married the late Ann Hefferon, of Co. Mayo, Ireland, while stationed in London with the RCAF during World War II, following completion of a tour of service in India as an aircraft mechanic with a transportation squadron flying missions to Burma.

Except for his war service overseas, he lived most of his life in Point la Nim and then Dalhousie, though he wintered in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida after his retirement from his long years of work as a crane operator with the NB International Paper Company, as it was the same skills to golf, a sport he took up later in life, joining the Restigouche Country Club upon his retirement.

His life reflected the best values of the era into which he was born. He was a private man who abhorred gossip and complaining of one’s lot in life. He believed in hard work, self-discipline, self-respect, and doing one’s faire share. He never forgot the poverty of his early child-hood, but while a thrifty man when it came to his own needs, he took pride and pleasure in being a good provider to his family and in supporting his children’s opportunity to have the education that he had not been privilege to have.

He leaves to mourn his son John Walsh of Montreal, his daughters Sheila Walsh of Perth Australia and Catherine Walsh of Montreal, his son-in-law Peter Sare, husband of Sheila, and his grandchildren Kate and Alexandra.

The store mentioned above was the "Woods Lucky Dollar Store" on Ramsay Street. He was also the owner of the Normandy Grill Restaurant where my aunts Josephine and Mary Ann worked many many years ago, and he reminded me of that often, telling me little stories about those days.
He was a walking history dictionary, knowing a little something about almost every family who lived in Campbellton in his younger days. His memory was very good and he loved sharing his stories, and memories. I sat with him for hours and noted the bits of history he would share and these have helped me tremendously in completing the two history and genealogy books I've written. Some of his memories are in Volume Two and some will be in other upcoming volumes although he will not see them in print he was proud and happy to help. He also loaned me his many photo albums and scrap books which he kept religiously. I will miss him as a friend and as a resource for my works.

Art was very soft spoken, also very involved with the church and always had a low, soft religious music playing in the background when I visited.
