Edmund Harper Sewell
The Sewell family is saddened to announce the sudden passing of Edmund Harper Sewell on September 22, 2002 at his residence in Fredericton in his 77th year.
He was born in Caraquet, the son of the late Joseph and Annie (Harper) Sewell.
He received his early education in Caraquet and graduated from Caraquet High School, Provincial Normal School in 1946. He graduated from UNB in 1953 with a BA and B.Ed then went to McGill University to obtain a masters degree in social work.
He loved New York City where he attended the University of New York.
He was always a scholar and loved reading the great works of our time. He had a long and extensive teaching career at Mount Allison Academy, Rothesay Collegiate School and at the UNB Teacher’s College as a French professor.
At the end of his working career, he was director of translation for the provincial government.
With his love of travel, he was able to see much of Canada’s north having worked with the Department of Indian Affairs in his early days at university. He also travelled extensively in Europe and the British Isles.
Ed had a great interest in war history and paid his respects at European cemeteries of fallen Canadian heroes, particularly that of his brother, Percy who was buried in Barrie Commonwealth Cemetery.
He is survived by his sisters; Jean Sewell and Grace Donald of Fredericton, his brothers; Albert of Ottawa and John of Fredericton, his nephews; Ian Donald of Fredericton and Brian Donald of Montpelier, Vermont, one niece, Cathy Donald of Halifax and cousins; Reginald, Donald, Lloyd, and Frank MacLean and Janet Miller of Dalhousie and Betty Robert of Campbellton.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers; Herbert and F/lt. Percy and one sister, Thelma.
A private memorial service was held on September 25 at the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel.
As per his wishes, his remains were cremated and buried in the family plot at the United Church Cemetery in Caraquet.
For those who wish, memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
His funeral arrangements were in the care of McAdam’s Select Community Funeral Home.
George Lecours
The death of George Lecours of the Village Nursing Home in Campbellton occurred on September 28 at his residence at the age of 71.
He was born in Campbellton to the late Leo Lecours and Edmee Thibodeau on June 23, 1931.
He is survived by two sisters; Mea (Fernand) Pitre of Escuminac, PQ and Nancy Martin of Saint John as well as many nieces.
His funeral was held on October 1 at Our Lady of Snows Church with Rev. Wilfred Benoit officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher’s Funeral Home in Campbellton.
Thomas “Chuchie” Joseph
The death of Thomas “Chuchie” Joseph of Listuguj occurred on September 28, 2002 at the Campbellton Regional Hospital at the age of 59.
He was born in Listuguj on March 8, 1943, the son of the late Frank Joseph and Lucie Bernard.
He was a carpenter but was better known for his carving of sterifoam cups.
He is survived by his very special friend Reinna St-Amand, his sisters; Helen (Clarence) Clement of Listuguj, Barbara (Rufus) Stancliffe of Vermont, Mary Joseph Barnaby of Listuguj, Rose Veneau of Haverhill, Mass., Lucy (Ernest) Clement of Listuguj, Joan (Bomy) Joseph of Haverhill, Mass., Joyce (Jayjay) Joseph of Listuguj, Sandra Joseph (Earl) Taylor of Florida, Sarah Joseph of Campbellton and Carol Ann Joseph of Vermont, his brothers; Andy and John Joseph of Listuguj and Frank Joseph Dedam (his half brother) of Saint John, his adopted brothers; Francis and Elmer Joseph of Vermont as well as many nephews and nieces.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother Steven.
His funeral was held at St. Ann’s Church in Listuguj on October 1 with Father Landry officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
His pallbearers were Thomas, Elias, and Guy Metallic and Travis Barnaby, Clifford Clement and Donny Germain.
Funeral arrangements were in the care of Maher’s Funeral Home in Campbellton.
John Guitard
The death of John Guitard, 87, of Belledune occurred on September 22 at the Bathurst Regional Hospital. He was born in Belledune, the son of John Mick and Brigitte Guitard.
He is survived by his wife Isabelle (Laplante) of Belledune, his son, Camille (Pauline) Guitard of Belledune, his daughters; Jeannine Hartley (Steve) of Newmarket, Ontario, and Jacqueline (Lorenzo) Guitard of Belledune, his brothers; Leon, Evariste, Victorin, Leo Paul, and Israel, his sisters; Rose Lejeune and Amelia (Leonard) Guitard, as well as 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sons; Lionel and Leo, a brother Edgar and two sisters; Evangeline and Helene.
His funeral was held on September 25 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Belledune with Father Wilfred Benoit officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Pallbearers were three of his grandsons; Michel Guitard, John Guitard and Damien Hartley and three of his nephews; Donald Pepin, Eric Pepin and Romeo Laplante.
Arrangements for his funeral were in the care of MacMillan’s Funeral Home in Black Point.
