James Wilfrid Butler
James Wilfred Butler died peacefully March 9, 2003 in Thunder Bay, ON. Born on July 30, 1923 to John and Jane in Campbellton, NB along the picturesque Baie des Chaleurs.
Jimmy grew up quickly on Roseberry Street, escaping the tuberculosis that took six of his brothers and sisters. Enlisting with the North Shore Regiment at 16, he fought overseas in Wold War 11. A grenade explosion sent him flying off his motorcycle but left him with a non-life threatening injury, the joint of his thumb was fused so that he had a stiff, straight thumb, perfect for hitch-hiking. From then on, Jimmy was destined to go places.
Returning from the War in 1945, Jimmy was instantly captivated by the raven-haired beauty of one of the Geldart twins, Emily, whom he married in 1948 and with whom he had two children, Margaret and Robert.
Jimmy settled down temporarily, driving truck for Eaton's by day and playing the trumpet for the renowned Stardusters by night. By 1959, that hitchiker thumb got him moving again. He re-enlisted and moved his family to the big wealthy province of Ontario- Barrie, Oakville (with a one year side trip to the Gaza Strip as a UN Peacekeeper), Pembroke and finally, Petawawa, where he and Emily lived for many years.
Replacing his passion for music with an obsession for skydiving and airplanes, Jimmy gave Emily many occasions for fright. Convinced that he could do anything if he just worked hard enough, Jimmy owned his own aviation business soon after he retired from the military as Warrant Officer 1st Class.
A diminutive man - he used to say he was 6' tall before he started sky-diving - Jimmy never let his small frame stop him from accomplishing anything he set his mind to.
Jim made countless friends of students he taught to fly. He was a natural teacher. Our bookshelves were full of plaques and gifts from fellow pilots and former students.
Jimmy was predeceased by his beautiful wife, Emily, in 2000 and will be remembered affectionately by his grandchildren Luke, Thomas, Stacy and Daniel (Thunder Bay) and Trevor, Tara and Trina (Ottawa) and his two great granddaughters Makaila and Madison (Thunder Bay).
Margaret and Hank Kuppinen and Robert and Kim Butler were extremely grateful to the dedicated and compassionate staff of Bethammi Nursing Home, who cared for both of our parents so well. Thank you to Aila, for your humour. You always brightened our day. You were our champion. Thank you Jean, for loving our dad as if he were your own.
Jimmy will be making his final flight to rest beside Emily in Campbellton following a visitation at Murphy Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 11, 2003.
We'll always remember the motto that guided you through life: "Any landing that you can walk away from is a good landing."
If friends and relatives wish, donations may be made in Jim's name to St. Joseph's Heritage, 63 Carrie Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7A 4J2
