Ira MacIntosh Beatie
Professor Ira MacIntosh Beatie, P. Eng., FCSCE, FEIC, FIE (PAK) was born in 1924 in Nash Creek, New Brunswick, the son of William Allan Beatie of Winchester Massachusetts, and Jessie Catherine MacIntosh of Rose Hill, South Tetagouche, New Brunswick. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys (Barkhouse), and is survived by his daughter Patsy Beatie-Huggan, her husband Lyall Huggan of Charlottetown and; two sons, David and his wife Lori Lynch of Fredericton, and Donald of Montreal; three grandchildren, Tamara, Christopher and Kevin; companion Vivian MacMillan and several nieces, nephews and their children.
Ira began his long relationship with the University of New Brunswick during the Second World War. He received his B.Sc. in civil engineering in 1944 and later obtained an MS in civil engineering from Stanford University. He joined the civil engineering department of the Faculty of Engineering in 1945. Ira, together with Howard McFarlane, Robert McLaughlin and Albert Stevens were known as "The Four Engineers." They formed the nucleus of the expansion of the until, his department during the post-war years. Ira took over as head of the department in 1957 and spent the rest of his career at UNB, teaching and conducting research retirement in 1984. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1985. A long time supporter and friend of UNB, Ira was an active alumni member and volunteer at Homecoming 2000. His three children Patsy, David and Donald, are all UNB Graduates. Today, the Ira Beatie Discretionary Fund in Civil Engineering, which he began in 1997, is a testament to his commitment to his profession and to the university that he loved.
Ira was active in professional organizations, and in business and community service. He was named Fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and was the president of the Association of Professional Engineers of New Brunswick. In 1945 he was a founding partner of what would eventually become the ADI Group, one of the most successful engineering companies in Atlantic Canada. He later entered municipal politics, becoming a Fredericton City Councilor from 1980-1983. Following his retirement he became involved in environmental advocacy, establishing Fredericton Recycling Inc. and serving as a member of the Fixed Link (Confederation Bridge). Proud of his Scottish heritage, he was an active genealogist and President of the Fredericton Society of St. Andrew. In recent years he spent considerable time renewing his roots in Northern New Brunswick, organizing a MacIntosh family reunion in 2001. He loved spending summers in Grand Lake and was an avid gardener. He was also an active member of the Rotary Club of Fredericton and the Garrison Club.
His colleagues, friends and family will miss his warm smile, quick wit and good humor, He was 79 years old.
Burnley Ronald Eugene Whitney
The death of Burnley R.E. Whitney, of Barnaby New Brunswick husband of Amy (Allison) Whitney, occurred at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Monday July 14th, 2003 at the age 61. Born in Newcastle, Burnley was the son of the late John and Theresa (McLean) Whitney. He is survived by one daughter, Sally (Julien), of Dalhousie, N.B.; two sons, Sean (Suzanne), and Ronald (Line), of Fredericton, N.B.; two sisters, Joyce (Ralph) Gilks, of Dalhousie, and Mary Theresa (David) Russell of Woodstock, N.B.; three brothers, John (Julie), James (Audrey), and Charles (Eleanor), all of Newcastle N.B.; three grandchildren Jessica of Dalhousie, and Ryan and Alexander, of Fredericton; and several nieces and nephews.
Frederick Colin Steiner
Frederick Colin Steiner, of Campbellton N.B., passed away at the Campbellton Regional Hospital on August 6th, 2003 at the age of 53.
Born in Campbellton October 12th 1949, he was the son of Frederick Steiner (deceased) and Charlotte Anderson.
Mr. Steiner was employed as a postal clerk for 32 years, and was member of the Lions Curling Club.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne MacDonald; mother, Charlotte Renault; stepfather, Jack Renault; and daughter Erin Steiner Reid (Trevor).
He is also survived by several aunts and uncles, as well as many cousins.
Charles Henry Cady
The death of Charles Henry Cady, 94, of Campbellton occurred at the Campbellton Regional Hospital. He is survived by his daughter, Doreen Smollett, Toronto, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three sisters, and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was a long employee of the City of Campbellton.
Muriel Robertson Smith
On August 12th 2003 Muriel Robertson Smith left this world in her ninety-first year after lengthy illness. She is survived by her daughter Shirley-Ann Boyd; her sons, Colin, Gary, and Donald, and her sisters, Lillian Pond, Lois (Ben) Dalcourt, and Joyce McKenzie. Muriel was predeceased by her husband, her son, Roland, her daughter, Heather, and six brothers.
Rene Girard
The death of Rene Girard of 350 Vimy St., Dalhousie, occurred at his home on August 6th 2003. He was 80 years old.
Born in Grand Mere, Quebec, on September 6th 1922, he was the son of the late Rosaire Girard and the late Rosa Cossette and had been a papermaker at the NBIP mill prior to his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Lea LeBlond of Dalhousie, children, Andre, Jean Paul (Trisha), Monique (Roger) Pitre, and Gilles (Pauline), all of Dalhousie, Claude (Georgette) of Charlo, Nicole (Levy Cayouette) of Eel River Crossing, and Julie (Charles) Boris of Malauze and 12 grandchildren
Also surviving is a sister, Rose LeTourneau of Dalhousie and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Andre, a son, Denis and a grandson, Luc Girard.
Mr. William Demeau
On August 7th 2003, passed away at the Village Nursing Home, Mr. William Demeau formerly of Robinsonville.
Born in Robinsonville on September 21st 1914 he was the son of the late John Harris and the late Jessie Harris.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers: Wesley Demeau and Hudson Demeau; 2 sisters: Elizabeth Irvine and Laura Wise.
William (Bill) MacCurdy
The death of William (Bill) MacCurdy, of Point-La-Nim, occurred Friday, August 1st 2003 at the age of 78.
Born in Point-La-Nim, he was the son of the late William MacCurdy and Laura Martin.
He was employed at the NBIP as an electrician for 25 years, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was also a member of the St. John's Presbyterian Church in Dalhousie, a Registered Agricultural Producer with the NB Federation of Agriculture, and the NB Cattlemarketing Agency.
He loved the outdoors, animals and farming.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; son, Jim (Sandra) Point-La-Nim, sister; Whilemina Raynor, Campbellton, three grandchildren, Justin, Andrea and Jonathan, nephews Jon, Gary and Bill and a niece Carolyn.
He was predeceased by his parents, his son Billy Jr.; sisters, Isabel MacCurdy, Frances Miller and Margaret Cooling; and brothers, John and Allison.
Wilfred (Bill) Rioux
Wilfred (Bill) Rioux of McLeods passed away at the Village Nursing Home in Campbellton on August 4th 2003 at the age of 82.
Born in Campbellton on April 9th 1921, he was the son of Desire Rioux (deceased 1936) and Caroline Roberts (deceased 1957).
Mr. Rioux was self-employed as a woodworker and was one of the original founders of the Rimap Youth and Recreation Organization.
He is survived by his wife, Emilia (LeBlanc) Rioux; sons, Marc (Marlene), Raymond and Roderick (Krista); sisters, Jean Savoy, of Trois-Rivieres P.Q., Winnifred (Ernest) Gagnon of Atholville N.B., and Dorothy (Oscar) Reneault, of Campbellton N.B.; brothers, Thomas of Summerside P.E.I., and Kent of Sept Isles, P.Q.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Andy, Sheena, Brittany, Kaylie, and Erin. Also by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Merlyn, Lester, Terrance, Ronald and Joseph and by daughter baby Joanne.
